CONSTITUENCY ABOLISHED 1885

Guy Cuthbert Dawnay
MP for Yorkshire North Riding 1882‑1885
Dawnay was the 4th son of the 7th Viscount Downe. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford before his love of adventure led him to many parts of the world, either as a hunter or as a volunteer soldier. His hunting expeditions took him to India, Persia, Abyssinia, Sudan and Zululand. Due to his knowledge of Zululand, he was appointed as intelligence officer on the Army staff during the Zulu War of 1879. He also served as a volunteer in Egypt and at Suakin, a port in north-eastern Sudan, on the Red Sea.
He was elected MP for the North Riding of Yorkshire at a by‑election in January 1882 and sat for this constituency until the general election of 1885, in which election he unsuccessfully contested the seat of Cleveland.
His love of hunting eventually led to his death. The following obituary is taken from The Times of 27 March 1889:-
Our Zanzibar Correspondent [surely only The Times could have had a 'Zanzibar Correspondent'] telegraphed last night: "Authentic news reached Zanzibar yesterday evening that the Hon. Guy Dawnay had been killed by a wounded buffalo at Ngiri, in Masailand [i.e. present-day Tanzania], on the 28th of February. The details given prove that he was unaccompanied at the time of the accident, of which the only witnesses were two Masai. These men climbed up a tree at some distance and ultimately escaped. Mr. Dawnay seems to have approached the fallen buffalo, believing him to be dead, but the animal rose and killed him, it is believed, instantaneously, smashing his rifle into two parts. Mr. Buckley, his companion, returned forthwith with the caravan to the coast. The news has been received with immense sorrow in Zanzibar, where Mr. Dawnay had during his stay made himself much beloved."
Lord Frederick Charles Cavendish
MP for Yorkshire West Riding North 1865-1882
Cavendish was the second son of William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire. He entered the House of Commons in 1865 and filled a number of posts, including that of private secretary to the Prime Minister, William Gladstone, and Financial Secretary to the Treasury. In April 1882, William Edward Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, resigned his position and Cavendish was appointed to succeed him.
Travelling to Dublin, he took the oath as Chief Secretary on 6 May 1882, but later that day, together with the Permanent Under Secretary for Ireland, Thomas Burke, he was murdered while walking through Phoenix Park.
The murders were front-page news in every contemporary newspaper. The following extract, which is typical of all newspapers, is from the Bristol Mercury of 8 May 1882:-
A frightful crime was committed in Dublin on Saturday evening. Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was sworn in as Chief Secretary at one o'clock, and Mr. T.H. Burke, Under Secretary, were murdered in Phoenix-park, Dublin, at ten minutes past seven o'clock. Lord Frederick left his office about six, and was taking a walk in the park, about half a mile from the city gate and a quarter from the Chief Secretary's lodge, when a car drove up containing four men, two of whom attacked Lord Frederick and Mr. Burke, stabbing them several times in the throat and breast. Both seem to have struggled hard. The bodies were discovered about ten paces apart by two young gentlemen on tricycles, and the police were quickly on the spot. Two medical men also arrived promptly, but life in each case was extinct. The upper part of Mr. Burke's body was mutilated in a frightful manner by blows with a sharp instrument. The body of Lord Frederick Cavendish displayed similar wounds, and the left arm was broken and torn as if it had been raised to protect the breast. The ground near each body was drenched in blood. It is said that the men after committing the murder jumped into the car and drove off.
Responsibility for the murders was claimed by a hitherto unheard of group calling themselves the Irish National Invincibles. The police investigation was headed by Superintendent John Mallon, who soon formed suspicions against a number of Fenian activists. These suspects were arrested, and by playing the suspects off against each other, Mallon eventually, in early 1883, was able to charge 17 men with conspiracy to murder. In order to save his own neck, the leader of the group, James Carey, turned Queen's evidence and betrayed the full details of the plot and his fellow conspirators, five of whom were subsequently hanged.
As a traitor to the Irish cause, Carey's life was obviously in great danger. In an attempt to protect him, he and his family were secretly placed, under the name of Power, on a ship bound for Cape Town. On board the ship, Carey befriended a man named Patrick O'Donnell, who at the time had no idea of Power's real identity. However, he accidentally discovered who Power really was, and accompanied him on the further voyage from Cape Town to Natal. During this voyage, on 29 July 1883, O'Donnell killed Carey with a revolver. O'Donnell was later transported back to England for trial for murder on the high seas. Found guilty, he was executed on 17 December 1883.
